Technology in Action:
Learning Management Systems

by Kristin Kornher, Training Specialist

Advances in technology have made many new developments in the arena of learning and training possible. Technology is being leveraged to enhance learning. Some ways that technology is being implemented in training programs worldwide include e-learning, computer based training (CBT), software simulation, targeted instruction, and use of learning management systems (LMSs). Let’s focus on the LMS.

Online LMSs are becoming increasingly popular. Their popularity is driven by their ability to enhance many areas of the learning process from learning itself to the administration of the learning. LMSs provide storage and dissemination of learning content (e-learning and CBTs) as well as the ability to assist organizations in providing the right training to the right people at the right time in the right place.

GOAL MET BY LMS
Most LMSs have assessment tools built in (tests and /or surveys) to monitor the effectiveness of training, trainers, and content.
Since most LMSs are online, training can be accomplished from any internet-accessible location including the workplace, home, or travel locations. Offices in one part of the world can communicate more effectively with other locations and also share learning content across the globe in minutes.
Features such as chat rooms, teaming rooms, and blogs encourage constant monitoring of training content. A learner can ask questions and bring up pertinent points immediately. This is particularly advantageous in dynamic environments such as the IT industry.
LMS helps learners and instructors determine what people need which training and tracking the completion. The learner is provided with a map of their training plan which management can monitor and assess progress.
Content can be controlled and targeted to specific target audiences. For example, a sales person can receive sales-related training while a developer receives entirely different training. LMS can support all types of training ranging from CBT to instructor led.

ActioNet is on the cutting edge of training technology currently assisting one customer in implementing an LMS this year. The implemented LMS will ensure that all levels of personnel will receive the training they need in a timely, efficient, and effective manner.
